Boliden & ABB closes Low-Carbon Zinc loop

ABB partners up with Boliden to introduce Low-Carbon Zinc for its low voltage power distribution systems. With a carbon footprint that is 75 percent lower than conventional zinc, the partnership is making electrical infrastructure more sustainable.

Used to galavanize steel structures, zinc protects against corrosion for up to 100 years, maximizing their operating life. Partnering with ABB to electrify and optimize its value chain, Boliden uses renewable energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to just 1kg per kilo of metal produced – around 75 percent lower than the industry average.

ABB power distribution solutions, galvanized with Boliden’s Low-Carbon Zinc, can now be found in the Boliden mines where zinc ore is extracted.

ABB Smart Power President Massimiliano Cifalitti said: “At ABB, we are on a mission to help industries become leaner and cleaner. With ABB solutions, Boliden is using electricity in its operations more efficiently to reduce their environmental impact. Sourcing their Low-Carbon Zinc to help reduce the carbon footprint of our solutions demonstrates the value of partnerships in the energy transition and the circular economy.”

Designed for outdoor environments, ABB’s Kabeldon power distribution cabinets ensure neighborhoods, EV chargers, renewables, factories and mines around the world stay connected. The Cable Distribution Cabinet holds a Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verified by a third-party for complete transparency. Now galvanized using Low-Carbon Zinc and available in low-carbon steel, Kabeldon will also help customers reduce their power infrastructure’s environmental footprint.

“We are taking every possible step forward in our mining and smelting operations for high productivity and the lowest possible climate impact. Our collaboration with ABB shows why we are a frontrunner in this field: together we have electrified much of our operations and are driving efficiency advancements. Having ABB solutions in our facilities made with our own Low-Carbon Zinc is an important example of value chain responsibility.”, Daniel Asplund, Zinc Sales Manager at Boliden concludes.
