Climate

Boliden implements a wide range of measures to reduce the negative impact of our operations on the climate and to drive positive change.

Metals and the climate

Boliden’s vision is to be the most climate-friendly and respected metal provider in the world. From a global perspective, the climate performance of our operations is already very high. This is due to, among other things, a high degree of electrification and high productivity. However, major efforts will continue to be necessary in order to promote development while, in parallel, there will be an increasing demand for base metals.

Climate targets

  • 42 percent reduction of absolute CO2e emissions in scope 1 and 2 by 2030, compared to base year 2021

  • 30 percent reduction of CO2e emissions in scope 3 by 2030, compared to base year 2021

  • Average for all copper production is set at the limit values for Low-Carbon Copper; <1.5 metric tonnes CO2e/t Cu

  • Average for all zinc production is set at the limit values for Low-Carbon Zinc; <1 metric tonnes CO2e/t Zn

As a member company of The International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM), we also share its long-term goal of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 which is in line with the ambitions set out in the Paris Agreement to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 °C.

In order to deal with changes on the market, while also reducing our emissions, alternative fuels and new process technologies are crucial.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

Boliden is a leader within the production of metals with low-carbon footprint. Nevertheless, we face several climate-related challenges as many others in our industry. Our business areas Mines and Smelters add to GHG emissions in various ways. GHG emissions from Mines are generated mainly through fuel consumption and for Smelters the primary GHG generators are reducing agents and heating for smelting processes. In order to reduce the negative impact of our operations and drive positive change, we focus our effort where our efforts where they will have the greatest impact. Investments in electrification and energy efficiency are done on a regular basis to further reduce our GHG emissions.

Climate smart transports

Boliden is investing SEK 300 million in the expansion of electrified transport at the two open-pit mines of Aitik and Kevitsa.

Climate strategy program

Boliden’s climate strategy program summarizes how we manage climate-related risks and opportunities. It describes our approach and the steps we are taking towards decarbonization. Decarbonization reduces the risks associated with climate change. At the same time, it strengthens our competitiveness and long-term profitability. The climate strategy program includes:

  • Management – how climate-related risks and opportunities are managed.
  • Strategy – the actual and potential impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities on Boliden’s operations, strategy and financial planning.
  • Risk management – how climate-related risks are identified, analyzed and managed.
  • Metrics and goals – the metrics and goals used to assess and manage relevant climate-related risks and opportunities.
  • Performance – Boliden’s current performance and progress towards its climate goals.

Low-Carbon & Recycled Metals

Our Low-Carbon Copper and Low-Carbon Zinc products are produced using raw materials from our own mines where we use fossil-free electricity. This means that they have among the lowest carbon footprints in the world compared to global industry average. The Recycled Copper and Recycled Zinc products use, among other things, recycled electronics, copper scrap and dust from steel mills as their primary raw materials. By efficiently utilizing the metals already present in society, we can minimize the need for new mines.
